An inshore cruiser.

My wish list-

  • Minimal draught.
  • Fuel economy.
  • 200 mile days.(Occasionally)
  • Level deck.
  • Steady at anchor.
  • Reasonable comforts.
  • Lots of shade.
  • Transportable.
  • 2-3 week cruising range.
 My choices-
  1. Open deck catamaran.
  2. Displacement diesel cruiser.
 My environment-
  • Latitude, 12.3 Degrees south.........No need to buy a diesel heater
  • Sea surface temperature ...............30+ Deg C. for one third of the year.
  • Ambient temperature.....................32 Deg C average maximum.
  • Tide range, 7.8 metres...................A moderate tide run.
A common Darwin day, gusting to 2 knots. Harbour about half tide.

One way or another I have managed to come up with a large list of wants in a boat.

A simple philosophy worth considering, as proposed by Dick Newick, who said you can have two of three options in a good boat.
The options-
  1. Seaworthy.
  2. Fast.
  3. Comfortable.
My final choice, from Richard Woods, A Skoota 24 powercat. Neither the Queen Mary, nor a tin canoe.

A 20 foot Skoota showing shallow draught.

The 24, similar to the 20 foot version, but with an aft cabin.
